What is a Broadway National Tour?
A Broadway show that was on Broadway or is currently on Broadway in New York City and is now coming to a city near you, if you do not live in New York City.
There are Broadway caliber theatre houses all around the country and the producers of the show strike up a deal with theatre owners and other theatre producers to bring a Broadway production around the country.
It is the same choreography, same costumes and most of the time it is the same set. however there may be modifications so that everything is easy to put up and take down in different locations, without ruining the structure of the temporary theatre homes.
Touring is a quick way to figure out what environments work for you and don’t work for you. It is a crash course in relationships and professionalism. You are meeting and working with people from all over the world. And you are pushing through long travel days into shows and some times two show days.
These contracts are a great way to build stamina and find your performer hacks.
My favorite part of touring was becoming really close with my cast and traveling to new states and seeing their museums, restaurants and clubs.
The down side would be some of the sketchy hotels we stayed at, the work schedule (sometimes performing 9 shows a week), trying to find good food consistently, living out of a suitcase, and being away from family.
I have met performers who have made a career of touring. Some people are very good at it and met their match. You don’t know until you try.
Keep dancing superstars!
