I am scrolling on Instagram minding everyone’s business when I come across a post. https://www.instagram.com/dancersofdbdt/
And then I could not stop seeing it on my feed. So I decided to take a look.
I think it should be the business of all dancers to see how we are being treated in professional environments everywhere.
How does the famous quote go? “Overworked and Underpaid.” “Overworked and Overwhelmed.” “Sick and Tired of being Sick and Tired.”
I decided to look into the details of what is happening in real time with this 50 year old dance institution that is a pillar of the black community in Dallas, Texas.
I know black dancers all over the world doing very important work for black audiences, communities and for the culture and legacy of black dance. And I hear stories of unsafe work conditions and not getting paid.
Now we all complain here and there about not liking our job all the times or just areas of improvement. But when employees decide to unionize that is a big step.
Also keep in mind that dancers train their whole lives to join these legendary black dance companies, that tour the world and are featured in museums.
So take a moment and have a listen and let me know what you think. Because I am only touching the surface of what can be a much longer conversation on unions in the performing arts.
Stay Strong!
